What Is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome(PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder amoung women of reproductive age.
Poly Cystic means- Many Cysts So polycystic ovaries means, many cysts on the ovaries.
However, not all women with PCOS have cysts on their ovaries. There are many symptions associated with PCOS and some women may only have a few, some women may have all of them. It varies from woman to woman.

PCOS symptoms often begin at the onset of puberty. Sometimes the symptoms may even appear later on in life.

Generally, diagnosis of PCOS comes from at least two of the following symptoms:
Infrequent/ Absent periods.
Hair growth in places women dont usually have, the face, the chin etc. This is caused by excess androgens, also known as male hormones, testosterone.
Poly cystic ovaries, this is determined by A vaginal ultrasound.
Infertility, due to not ovulating.
Obesity- mostly around the waist area.
Dark patches of skin.
Skin tags.
Insulin resistance, the main cause of the weight gain.
Acne
Mood swings/ Depression

Currently there is no known cause for PCOS and there is no cure. You can manage your PCOS symptoms with diet, excersise, or even with birth control pills.

PCOS can lead to bigger, more severe problems later in life such as:
Heart disease
Type 2 Diabetis
                                                 High blood pressure
